Membership Categories

Membership Categories Defined

Regular Membership: Available to all interested individuals.

Sustaining Membership: All the benefits of Regular Membership, while providing added support of MLA operating expenses. Half of the cost of a Sustaining Membership is deductible from federal taxes.

Retired Membership: Available to fully-retired members, who retain all benefits of Regular Membership.

Paraprofessional/Non-Salaried/Part-time Membership: All the benefits of Regular Membership are available to paraprofessional staff, and to those working part-time, working as volunteers, or are unemployed.

Early Career: Available to those in their first five chronological years after their status as students has ceased. Carries same benefits and privileges as Regular Membership. [NEW, starting with 2019-2020 membership year]

Student Membership: Available to current students (undergrad or graduate) and to graduates during their first year following graduation. Students must reapply after four years in this category.

Emergency Circumstances: A temporary “Emergency Circumstances” membership category is available in FY21 for individuals experiencing significant loss of income due to employment circumstances. The recommended amount (default) is $24. If you wish to pay a different amount, please contact the MLA Business Office for instructions.

Corporate Membership: Available to any corporation or organization actively engaged in library work, or that has a serious interest in the stated purposes of the Association.

About MLA

The Music Library Association is the professional association for music libraries and librarianship in the United States. Founded in 1931, it has an international membership of librarians, musicians, scholars, educators, and members of the book and music trades. Complementing the Association’s national and international activities are eleven regional chapters that carry out its programs on the local level.
