MLA has long struggled with diversifying its ranks; once funded, this scholarship will help ameliorate this struggle by providing financial support to at least one student from a diverse background who is seeking a career in music librarianship. The scholarship will provide at least $1,500 per year to support the tuition (and, if possible, other educational costs) of a student from an underrepresented population to matriculate in a program leading to a career in music librarianship.
The MLA Diversity Scholarship will promote diversity in the field of music librarianship by supporting students from groups who are historically underrepresented in the profession including, but not limited to, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, and Native Americans. The definition of an “underrepresented group” in music librarianship will likely change and expand in response to research in the area and efforts of MLA over time.
We are currently working towards an initial $50,000 goal that will create an endowment; once we have reached that goal, we will begin to offer the scholarship. Over time, we will continue to build the fund and add additional scholarships or increased support for one student.
