SACO Music Funnel

The SACO Music Funnel Project was formed in 2010 and falls under the Library of Congress Cooperative Cataloging Program known as SACO (Subject Authority Cooperative Program). Members of the Music Library Association (MLA) were charter members of the SACO Music Funnel Project. The goal of the project is to promote and facilitate the creation of medium of performance terms and of subject authorities relating to the cataloging of notated music, musical sound recordings, and works about music, whether or not submitters are in SACO-member institutions.

The funnel project provides a framework for proposing new subject headings for inclusion in Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), new classification numbers for Library of Congress Classification (LCC), new medium of performance terms for the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT), and music terms for the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT). All Music Funnel proposals are submitted under the institution code for the funnel: CaStSMF. There are no membership requirements; all those cataloging music resources are welcome to submit proposals. The aim is to assist you as much as possible in getting your proposal through the submission process and approved.

Submissions may be sent the Coordinator (currently Nancy Lorimer, Stanford University) through email, either including the proposal in the body of the email or using the proposal forms provided for guidance. For LCGFT, please use the LCSH form.
