Give to Michael Colby's Half-as-Good-as-Judy-Tsou's-Diversity-Scholarship-Fundraising-Challenge Challenge

I'm thrilled to announce this morning that we're launching a super-quick matching campaign for the Diversity Scholarship. As part of Michael Colby's Half-as-Good-as-Judy-Tsou's-Diversity-Scholarship-Fundraising-Challenge Challenge, any gift to the Scholarship fund between now and Saturday will be matched by Michael Colby, up to $5,000! ANY gift is eligible, no matter the size, so this is your opportunity to double a modest gift (or a generous one; we love generous gifts, too) to the fund.

You don't need to do anything special to be sure we count your gift in this challenge, just give to the fund between now and 3:00 on Saturday. Simply go to the MLA homepage and click on "Donate" (or go directly to the Diversity Scholarship page: http://www.musiclibraryassoc.org/page/DiversityFund) give a gift to the fund, and your gift will be matched. Or, those of you at the conference can make a cash or check donation at the Silent Auction table in the Exhibits area.

I want to offer a huge thank you to Michael Colby for initiating this challenge. Michael has been a champion of this fund from the beginning and has been instrumental in making this a successful initiative. And, of course, we also owe enormous gratitude to Judy Tsou whose "twice as good" $10,000 challenge last year helped us make a huge amount of progress in our fundraising efforts and inspired Michael to push us further.

This is a big challenge for us, but we can do it! If I've learned one thing as Development Officer, it's that MLA is a creative and generous group of people who don't shrink from a challenge.

Guidebook now available

The Music Library Association uses Guidebook, a conferencing app, to give attendees a mobile way to track of all the wonderful things happening at the conference.

Guidebook contains the following information:

Schedule (all sessions, meetings, and other events)
List of Speakers
Maps of the conference spaces
List of Exhibitors
Local Restaurant Guide
Links to social media feeds
Weather Report

The homepage is newly designed, and will display a rolling feed of your schedule items, as well as posted comments, photos, and notifications from conference attendees and your friendly Guidebook administrators.

You can download the Guidebook app on your phone and search for “MLA2017”—you’ll see the familiar sunny logo. Or, you can also access Guidebook from a laptop or tablet https://guidebook.com/guide/81426/

We will make every effort to keep things up to date, and Guidebook and the MLA website will be more current than the print program (try though we did to avoid any errors, there are sure to be some, along with unavoidable last-minute changes). Reduced Registration Program Applications Now Being Accepted

Applications are now being accepted for the 2017 Kevin Freeman Travel Grant

The grant, established in 1994 to honor the memory of Kevin Freeman and awarded for the first time in 1997, supports attendance of music librarians and students new to the field to the Music Library Association's annual meeting. The next meeting will take place February 22-26, 2017 in Orlando, Florida. Recipients receive gratis conference registration and a cash award of up to $750 for travel costs (transportation and accommodations). At least one grant will be awarded to a first-time attendee, if applicable. At least one grant will be awarded to an individual from an underrepresented racial or ethnic minority group*, if applicable.

* as defined by the US Labor Department’s Executive Order 11246: American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino.

Applicants must be members of the Music Library Association and in one of the following groups:

in the first three years of their professional career,
a graduate student in library school (by the time of the annual meeting) aspiring to become a music librarian OR
a recent graduate (within one year of degree) of a graduate program in librarianship seeking a professional position as a music librarian

Previous applicants who still qualify are welcome to reapply.

Applicants must fill out the online application and submit a current CV via the Kevin Freeman Travel Application page (accessed via http://www.musiclibraryassoc.org/?FreemanGrantApply ) by October 28, 2016. Letters of support accompanying the application are to be emailed to the Chair of the grant committee at the email address below and must also be received by October 28, 2016.

Below are brief guidelines on the application materials:

A letter of application which includes:
1. The reasons for attending the MLA Annual Conference and why you are a good candidate for this grant
2. A justification of financial need
A budget for travel costs to attend the MLA Annual Conference, submitted in PDF, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Excel format
Information about any other grants, matching funds, institutional support you may also receive to cover costs to attend the MLA Annual Meeting
The number of times you have attended the national MLA meeting
A current CV, submitted in PDF or Microsoft Word format
Two letters of support directly emailed by recommenders to Rebecca McCallum, Chair of the Kevin Freeman Travel Grant committee at rmccallum@wesleyan.edu. Acceptable file formats include PDF, Microsoft Word or plain email text. Please include “Kevin Freeman Travel Grant” in the subject of the message.

Grant recipients will be notified by mid-December, and announced at the MLA 2017 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. For questions about the award, please contact the Chair of the Freeman Travel Grant Committee at the email address below.
