The Beat Goes On-athon: Creating Linked Data for Music with RIMMF

During this workshop, which is an expansion of the Bernstein-based “Lenny-athon” held at MLA 2016, participants will use RIMMF (RDA in Many Metadata Formats: see http://www.marcofquality.com/wiki/rimmf/doku.php) to create entity records representing works, expressions, manifestations, persons, corporate bodies, etc. that are associated with a specific composer or musical artist, such as their compositions, performances, lectures, collaborators, and even books about them. The end result will be an “r-ball” of linked data, similar to the output of the 2016 Lenny-athon (see http://rballs.info/topics/p/lenny/lennycur.html).

 
Participants will be able to choose from among a small selection of composers and musicians encompassing various styles of music such as contemporary classical music, popular music, and jazz. Participants will have the opportunity to explore questions around the rules of composers and performers and the nature of aggregates or compilations. Multiple content types and formats will be included such as scores, audio recordings, and video recordings.

Kathy Glennan 

Kathy Glennan is the Head of Monographic and Music Cataloging at the University of Maryland and has more than 30 years of experience cataloging scores and audio recordings. She has been a member of the NACO Music Project since 1995 and currently serves as UMD’s NACO Coordinator. Throughout her career, Kathy has been involved with the Music Library Association  having served as a member and subsequently as chair of: the MARC Formats Subcommittee, the Descriptive Cataloging Subcommittee and the Bibliographic Control Committee (now known as the Cataloging and Metadata Committee). Since 2005, Kathy’s professional contributions and scholarship have focused on the development of RDA: Resource Description and Access, with a special emphasis on music cataloging instructions. This includes her service on ALA’s Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access first as the MLA liaison, then as a voting member, and later as the liaison from the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. In recognition of her growing expertise with RDA and her leadership skills, she became the ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA in 2013. This committee was renamed the RDA Steering Committee in late 2015. In this role, she spends her time interpreting RDA instructions, identifying problems, and shepherding change proposals from ALA to improve RDA. Kathy has given numerous presentations on RDA, FRBR, and MARC Formats issues, including a planning and presenting at a full-day MLA preconference in 2011, a half-day RDA cataloging workshop for the MLA Atlantic Chapter in 2012, and two 2011 ALCTS Webinars, RDA Basics: Scores and RDA Basics: Sound Recordings. She authored an article in the March 2012 issue of Notes, “The Development of Resource Description and Access and Its Impact on Music Materials.”

As the pressure mounts to "digitize all the things!," the need to upload new digital material quickly, efficiently and accurately while maintaining established standards for discovery and interoperability becomes essential.   This virtual preconference, which takes place June 7-8, will explore methods for meeting these expectations including leveraging existing archival data, batch processing, vocabulary reconciliation and other techniques.

Abstract: In this first webinar in the series, Independent Consultant, Richard Wallis, traces the history of the Schema.org vocabulary, plus its applicability to the bibliographic domain. He will share the background to, and activities of, the Schema Bib Extend W3C Community Group he chairs; why it was set up; how it approached the creation of bibliographic extension proposals; and how those proposals were shaped. He will then review the current status of the vocabulary and the recent introduction of the bib.schema.org and auto.schema.org extensions. Although Richard will be using bibliographic examples, the content of this webinar will be of interest and relevance to those in other domains, and/or considering other extensions.

Abstract: In this second more technical webinar in the series, Independent Consultant, Richard Wallis, explains the Schema.org extension mechanism, for external and reviewed/hosted extensions, and their relationship to the core Schema.org vocabulary. He will take an in-depth look at, demonstrate, and share experiences in designing, and creating a potential extension to the vocabulary. He will step through the process of creating the required vocabulary definition and examples files on a local system using a few simple tools then sharing them on a publicly visible temporary cloud instance before proposing to the Schema.org group.
