DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and manages the music collection by selecting books, scores, recordings, journals, and databases; creating order requests to expend the firm order allocation for music; monitoring approval plans, standing orders, and subscriptions; reviewing gift materials; selecting items for transfer to remote storage; performing collectionevaluations; formulating collection policies; and maintaining knowledge of current research and publishing trends.
  • Applies technical and bibliographic expertise to collection building by maintaining current knowledge of the use of the Libraries’ ILS processing modules as well as standard print and electronic bibliographic tools; by keeping abreast of policies and technical procedures relating to the acquisition of new materials; by participating in the searching, verification, and ordering process; and by assuming responsibility for resolving bibliographic problems related to music.
  • Maintains awareness of Music Library functions by collaborating with the supervisor of the Music Library in developing service policies and managing the collection at the Music Library.
  • Develops a knowledgeable, productive, and dependable staff for the Music Library by hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating the staff member employed at that facility in collaboration with the Music Library Coordinator.
  • Supports research and teaching by serving as liaison to the School of Music and maintaining awareness of research and curriculum needs; by providing general and in-depth references services, giving tours, conducting information literacy classes, and preparing instructional guides relating to music for the university community.
  • Assists the departmental web editor by providing information needed for webpages describing the music collection, Music Library, and library services related to music.
  • Contributes to the mission of the Collection Development department and the Libraries by collaborating with the department head and other Libraries’ colleagues; participating in the development and evaluation of policies and services; assessing user needs and satisfaction with learning outcomes; and serving on appropriate committees as appointed or elected.
  • Develops and maintains professional skills by participating in continuing education and professional development activities, such as workshops, conferences, and committee work; by conducting research for writing for publication; and by engaging in other creative and learning activities.
  • Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via the Libraries’ listserv and other communication tools, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
  • Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the department and organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming similar duties and responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

ALA-accredited MLIS; Bachelor’s degree or substantial undergraduate or graduate coursework in music; At least two years’ professional library experience working with substantial music collections, including collection development work; Familiarity with basic and subject-specific electronic databases and print reference resources for music; Ability to develop instruction sessions and to instruct users effectively both individually and in the classroom setting; Knowledge of current issues and trends in music publishing and its relation to the acquisition of library materials; Ability to work with a variety of modern European languages; Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library colleagues and productive interactions with faculty and students; Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students, faculty, and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in music preferred; Supervisory experience preferred; Knowledge of virtual reference services preferred.

The University of Georgia Libraries seeks a Music Librarian who will be responsible for the development and management of the Libraries’ general collection in music; for promoting awareness of and facilitating access to the collection; and for serving as liaison to the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. The Music Librarian supervises one staff member located at the Music Library and collaborates with the Music Library Coordinator for the School of Music. The Music Librarian reports to the Director for Collection Development. This position is based in the Main Library in the Collection Development Department.
