The Manager, Resource Description supervises the daily operations of the Resource Description Unit. This position manages daily workflows and special projects for the Unit, which encompasses copy and original cataloging of newly-acquired library materials in all formats, including digital, multi-media, and special collections material. The incumbent provides quality control for processed materials utilizing various metadata standards; edits and updates database records using batch process tools, such as MARCEdit; and implements project management plans for new cataloging and metadata initiatives identified by library administration and library collections management. The Manager supervises the processing and maintenance of multiple partner collections jointly managed with other University departments. This position assumes responsibility for the routine operation of the unit in the absence of the Resource Description Librarian.

Qualifications
Master of Library Science preferred with at least four years library experience or in a related position that demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities for the position including supervisory experience. Experience using Online Computer Library Center and integrated library systems.  This position requires advanced, extensive knowledge of technical rules and standards for library cataloging, including national cataloging rules and standards, including MARC21 standards (Machine Readable Cataloging) tagging, International Standard Bibliographic Description,and structure and coding of both local and national cataloging systems.  Requires knowledge of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Resource Description and Access (RDA), Program for Cooperative Cataloging/Library of Congress Policy Statements, Dublin Core, and other emerging metadata standards as well as knowledge of bibliographic record editing tools, including MARCEdit and global data change processes in an integrated library system environment. Knowledge of report creation techniques in an ILS environment. In addition, requires knowledge of at least one foreign language and experience cataloging at least one non-print format such as music, electronic resources, and/or media.

The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, high level of accuracy, strong attention to detail, excellent analytical thinking and problem solving skills, excellent organizational skills; and demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.  

Physical demands of the job include a great deal of sitting, typing, using a computer mouse, standing, walking, and lifting and occasionally shifting books or other media.  Consequently, the incumbent must be able to sit at a desk and/or computer for extended hours, read computer screens and use computer keyboards.  Close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus and read from printed materials and computer screens, generally switching from one to the other within short periods of time are essential.
