Creating Metadata for Rare and Archival Materials: Standards and Practices

The new standard, DCRM(M) or Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Music), has now been published. This program will introduce the DCRM(M) standard and discuss its use in creating metadata for unique music materials. Besides DCRM(M), there are other descriptive standards that may be appropriate for certain resources. This session will also discuss archival standards such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and its application in Encoded Archival Description (EAD), as well as the use of finding aids. Presenters will discuss different options available to catalogers as well as suggested practice for when to use which standard.
