Tell Me Something Good: Oral History Best Practices for Music Librarians
Oral histories present a unique set of challenges as archival collections, particularly in regards to copyright and access. This is especially true when the subjects are public figures, such as musicians and composers. In this session, archivists from three institutions – Andy Leach of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives, Anne Rhodes of Oral History of American Music (OHAM) at Yale University, and Krista White the Jazz Oral History Project (JOHP) at the Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University – will each present a brief overview of their oral history project, followed by a discussion of methods for conducting, processing, and providing access to oral histories. Topics of discussion will include oral history best practices; digital preservation and the handling of born-digital spoken word audiovisual material; transcriptions; copyright and permissions; oral history-specific tools; access; and arrangement and description.
