The JSC in November 2012 appointed the RDA Music Joint Working Group in order to reach consensus among music constituencies in forming principle-based and internationally applicable instructions relating to music resources for RDA: Resource Description and Access. Specifically, the group was tasked to identify, develop, and propose music-related instructions on behalf of the North American music community directly to the JSC. It consisted of representatives from three organizations: the Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres, the Library of Congress (U.S.A.), and the Music Library Association (U.S.A.). At that time, the JSC constituencies outside North America did not nominate members for the Group.
In 2014, 6JSC/Policy/4 set out general terms of reference applicable to all JSC Working Groups. Because of this, the JSC has reconstituted the RDA Music Joint Working Group under the general terms of reference as the JSC Music Working Group. Recognizing that description of music resources is international in scope, the JSC Music Working Group, while continuing the original goals of the 2012 Group, will broaden its horizons to include the perspectives of colleagues outside of North America in order to better identify solutions and ways forward for the description and access of music resources in RDA.
The JSC Music Working Group is charged to assist the JSC in the revision and development of instructions for describing music resources in RDA.
