Directory of Library School Offerings in Music LibrarianshipEducation Committee Library School Liaison Subcommittee Eighth Edition (January 2004) Compiled and edited by Robena Cornwell and Richard Griscom Introduction: Since 1985, the Music Library Association has issued its Directory of Library School Offerings in Music Librarianship with two audiences in mind: prospective music librarians in search of programs of higher education that will prepare them for a career in our profession, and educators and career counselors who are assisting these prospective music librarians. The Directory, now in its eighth edition, lists programs offered by institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada. Entries are arranged geographically by state or province, and then alphabetically within those divisions by institution name. Each entry includes information on:
Indexes provide quick access to institutions offering double degree programs; those offering the master's degree in library science with a concentration in music; those offering internships, practicums, or specialized courses in music librarianship; and those where credits in a music department partially fulfill the requirements for the library degree. In preparation for this eighth edition, we sent letters to representatives of thirty-four library-school programs accredited by the American Library Association. Each representative reviewed the entry published in the seventh edition (1998) and either updated the information or submitted an entirely new entry, using a web form. The letters were mailed in April 2003, and we received responses between April and December 2003. In a few cases, we received no response to our letter or our follow-up attempts; for these, we deleted the entry rather than carrying over information from the 1998 edition. Readers are encouraged to consult the websites of individual programs for updated information on curricular offerings and contact information. This edition was prepared with support and assistance from the MLA Library School Liaison Subcommittee (Richard Griscom, chair; Robena Cornwell, Gregg Geary, Geri Laudati, Diane Steinhaus) and its parent committee, the MLA Education Committee (Deborah Pierce, chair). Material support was provided by the University of Florida and the University of Illinois.
