Students may earn a "multiple degree" by working simultaneously or sequentially on master's degrees in two disciplines such as library and information science and music. Courses may be doubly counted for the two degrees as determined by the two departments involved. However, no more than 12 credits can be applied to both degrees. Students must apply to both departments. Possible major areas of study for the music degree are music composition, ethnomusicology, musicology, music theory at the master's level and three concentrations at the doctoral level.

A practicum in a music library can be arranged, working for 100 or 150 hours and earning 2 to 3 graduate credits that count toward the M.L.I.S. degree. Paid and non-paid internships are sometimes available in a music library, but students do not receive academic credit. The course Music Librarianship is offered every fourth semester and is intended for students who plan to pursue careers as professional music librarians or who plan to work in settings that require knowledge of music information sources and services. Emphasis will be placed on academic music librarianship, but the management of music materials in public and special libraries will also be addressed. Areas of music librarianship covered in the course include reference, cataloging, archives and preservation, digital music collections, and copyright. In addition, skills will be developed through evaluating music reference sources, preparing and delivering bibliographic instruction in music, and selecting music materials to support the interests of a particular library clientele. Part of the course Humanities Information Sources & Services is devoted to music materials. Six graduate level hours may be taken outside of the School of Library and Information Science with the approval of a faculty member.

Professional librarians may enroll in regular courses for credit or on an audit basis.
