Library Assistant V - Performing Arts Cataloger

Position Details
Responsible for original and adaptive cataloging and classification of monographic audio-visual materials in all formats, including but not limited to: video recordings, sound recordings, and electronic resources (direct and remote access) for all library collections, particularly for the Performing Arts collections; the original cataloging and classification of scores and sound recordings for Music Library; Participates in the cataloging and classification of sound recordings and other materials for the Performing Arts Special Collection. May catalog print monographs. Regardless of format, materials to be cataloged and classified will be in English and other languages (chiefly European). Creates or modifies NACO authority records (chiefly for use with non-music materials): for personal and corporate names and series, or creates local authority records. Creates SACO authority records for music genres and mediums of performance as appropriate. Revises the work of the individual responsible for the copy cataloging of scores for the Music Library as required. Knowledge and understanding of bibliographic standards and reference tools, including AACR2, RDA, LCRIs, Classification Web, LCSH, MARC and other metadata formats, and others. Consults the OCLC database for cataloging information; using professional judgment to enhance patron access and to resolve problems and conflicts, creates, updates, upgrades, enhances, corrects, and otherwise modifies bibliographic and authority records in OCLC and in Pegasus as needed. On a periodic basis, helps to design and implement short-term cataloging projects; may be asked to supervise and train student employees and/or coordinate and train staff work groups, monitor progress, and ensure quality of outcomes. Assists in formulation of cataloging policies and procedures. Contributes to the writing and maintenance of documentation for the cataloging of audio-visual materials and other areas as needed. Uses professional judgment to resolve problems and issues encountered day-to-day work. Keeps abreast of changes in professional practice and monitors appropriate cataloging and other professional listservs, blogs, and journals to remain current on issues affecting job responsibilities. 
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of library cataloging standards and practices, including principles of authority control. Working knowledge of technical services computer systems and software. Ability to organize work, set and maintain priorities, meet deadlines, and meet quality and quantity standards. Proven problem-solving abilities and time management skills. Proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, and the Web. Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Ability to work in a collegial environment.  


Desirable Requirements

Reading knowledge of one or more European languages. Experience with audio-visual cataloging. Subject background in music (popular and/or Western classical). Experience with project management.  

Salary and Benefits
$3,515 - $4,919/mo.
