The Authorities Subcommittee gave over most of its energies in
the past year to maintenance of the Types of Composition document. We supplemented our regular e-mail discussions
with some face time in Los Angeles during our business meeting. We also held some preliminary discussions about
proposing a plenary session on authority control issues for the New York meeting. A highlight of the Los Angeles open meeting was a
presentation by Joy Pile (Middlebury College), who outlined a means of using Web
technology to add sound files and digitized images of musical incipits to authority
records, and making those available in the library catalog to all users. Devising a cooperative model that could
incorporate this capacity will likely be the prerequisite for widespread use, and the
subcommittee intends to consider whether we might have a role in this. Work on the position paper for authority control
continues. The chair attended the Midwinter
and Annual meetings of the American Library Association as a liaison to the LITA/ALCTS
Authority Control in the Online Environment Interest Group (ACIG) and BCC liaison to the
ALCTS-Media Resources Committee.
The subcommittee bid adieu to Ruth Inman and Cheryl Gowing, and
welcomed new members Jeannette Thompson and Terry Simpkins after the Los Angeles meeting. In late summer, the subcommittee lost Joy Pile to
the lures of promotion within her university.
