ALCTS-MRC
ALA Annual Meeting, 1998
Washington, D.C.

The Media Resources Committee met twice during ALA. Major items of business and discussion included:

1) A change in name for the committee (formerly known as ALCTS Audiovisual Committee). All relevant agencies have now approved the change and a revised charge.

2) The appointment of David Reser as an LC liaison to the Committee.

3) A report from the Task Force on Rule 0.24 (which instructs catalogers to describe "the physical form of the item in hand, not the original or any previous form in which the work has been published"), which is re-examining this principle in light of new technologies.

4) An account of progress in constructing the ALCTS-MRC Web site, largely the work of intern Lowell Ashley. Some documents have been mounted, and now mechanisms for reporting needed updates to the appropriate ALA office are being developed. There is still uncertainty about what documents can be put up at the site without permission of the ALA Publications Office.

5) Future directions for the committee. Possibilities include a) a bibliography of resources for collection development and acquisition of audiovisual material, to be compiled by the Standards Subcommittee; b) a glossary of terms to help producers and distributors of media resources use the "Are you media-savvy" brochures in progress; and c) identifying further directions through focused surveys among the media-related committees in other ALA divisions.

6) The program proposal for Annual 1999. Titled "Acquiring minds want to know : collection development and the acquisitions process for videos and CD-ROMSs," the program would identify resources (electronic and paper) for locating video and CD-ROM titles, present resources for locating producers and distributors of these materials, and address collection development issues. The program proposal has received approval, and there are suggested names of speakers in hand. Ideas for programs for 2000 and beyond are welcome.

7) Personnel changes in addition to the appointment of the LC liaison. Lowell Ashley ended his term as intern and moved to full committee membership; Callie McGinnis is the new intern. Anne Moore and Merle Slyhoff completed their terms on the committtee, and Diane Bohr began hers.
