Announcements: Kelly Chambers has stepped down from
CAPC. Walter Walker will fill the vacant position.
•
MARBI Report (C. Gerhart): Cathy briefly discussed
various proposals that would be discussed at the upcoming MARBI
meting. For details on the discussioin papers and proposals, see the
Midwinter report from the MARC Formats Subcommittee.
•
CC:DA Report (Martha Yee for G. de Groat): The JSC will have
a meeting in march to discuss RDA; keep checking the web site for the
current RDA schedule.
•
Form/genre headings (Janis Young, LC): Janis reported that MBRS
began implementing LC genre/form heading
for moving images and radio programs on Jan. 1, 2009.
MIGFG and RADFG will no longer be used.
Beginning Feb. 1, 2009, all SACO
members will be authorized to contribute proposals for new and revised
genre/form headings. There
is a special
form available on the SACO
website. Five new
genre/form projects have been
authorized: cartography, law, literature, music and religion. The project for
cartographic material
genre/form headings is getting underway.
LC has developed a web site for genre/form headings: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/genreformgeneral.html. For further details on
form/genre headings,
see the Midwinter report from the Subject Access Subcommittee.

Guide Revision and Update Task Force (C.
Walden): The
document was completed in
December and can be found on the CAPC web site.

Video
Language Coding Best Practices Task Force (K. McGrath):
The group has submitted
a proposal to LC and is awaiting a
response.
•
Playaways
Best Practices Task Force (H. Frank):
The report was posted last fall. The
group is currently looking at how playaways fit with RDA.
•
Moving
Image Work-Level Records Task Force (K.
McGrath): The group
has posted a draft
to the web site. One
section still in
process

Audiovisual
Materials Glossary Update Task Force
(H. Frank): The group will start with electronic materials and hopes to
get
started next month.

add a geographic coordinates field for places to the MARC authority
record.

Library of Congress update: Janis
Young (Policy and
Standards Division)
- Field 034 for
geographic coordinates coming to name authorities in 2009
- OCLC has completed
the pre-population of non-Latin characters in cross-reference headings
in LC/NACO authority file
- LC, NLM, and NAL
plan to test RDA before making a decision regarding implementation
- On Dec. 11, 2008
the National Library of Sweden became the latest partner in the Virtual
International Authority File. A beta version will be available in 2009.
- Approximately
35,000 subject heading validation records have been created. The validation records are
not printed in the “Red Books”, but are available
through MARC distribution Service and Classification Web. The project was halted in
mid-2008 due to a programming glitch and will begin again when the
problem is resolved.
- LCSH SKOS: In 2008
an experimental prototype was launched to make LCSH freely available on
the Internet through SKOS format.
The prototype will be replaced with an official LC
site in the future. LC is committed to providing LCSH freely on the
Internet, with the goal of encouraging experimentation and use, reuse,
and interoperability of LCSH.
- Genre/form
headings projects for moving images and radio programs are almost
complete. LC
catalogers began implementing headings in new cataloging as of Jan. 1,
09.
- In Nov. LC
management approved five new genre/form headings projects: cartography,
law, literature, music and religion.

SAC-Form/Genre Implementation
Subcommittee forum: Philip Young

Philip
spoke about the activities
of the Subcommittee on Genre/Form Implementation.
OCLC
update: Robert Bremer
OCLC
provided a Word document
regarding projects related to authority control.
The project to add non-Latin scripts to
authority records is complete. The
project to remove ending periods in authority records is still under
way. The
project to add 781s to geographic name authority records will resume in
the
spring following completion of the terminal periods project. OCLC
completed the
first phase of the project to control more headings in WorldCat. A total of about 25.5
million new personal
name headings were controlled during the first phase.
Future projects are under discussion.
