BCC2006/SMF/4
Subcommittee on MARC Formats
2006 Annual Report
Members: Jim Alberts, chair, Bruce Evans, Joe Hafner, Kevin Medows, Kerri Scannell, Spiro Shetuni, Matthew Wise, Jay Weitz, OCLC Representative, Sue Vita, LC Representative. Grace Fitzgerald and Paul Cauthen rotated off the committee, effective February 2006.
Paul Cauthen attended MARBI as Music Library Association liaison June 25-26, 2005 and Jan. 21-22, 2006. In the June meeting, he introduced MARC proposal 2005-08, to accommodate IAML coded data in fields 008/19-19, 047 and 048. MARBI approved the section on medium of performance (field 048) but asked the section on form and genre codes (field 047) be resubmitted; it was later resubmitted as proposal 2006-01.
During the MARBI meetings of Jan. 21-22, 2006, Paul introduced proposal 2006-01, which was approved. This validated IAML codes for use in the 047 field, facilitating information exchange between U.S., Canadian and European libraries.
At the 2006 Subcommittee on MARC Formats meeting in Memphis, the SMF discussed the approval of proposals
2004-05 (the musical incipit field) and
2006-01. Paul introduced the discussion paper
2006-DP08 on the addition of new fields for incorporating former headings data in authority records in cases in which the rules would preclude retaining such data. Paul Cauthen introduced the incoming chair, Jim Alberts.
Jim Alberts represented MLA at the MARBI meeting, June 25-26, 2006. MARC proposals that may be of interest to music catalogers include 2006-DP04, Data elements needed to ascertain copyright facts, 2006-DP06, Defining subfields for languages of summaries, abstracts, subtitles and captions in field 041 of the MARC 21 Bibliographic format, and
2006-DP07, Recording set information for multipart cartographic materials (which may have wide implications for the description of multipart sets and multi-volume works in various formats).
