MLA liaison report to BCC from ALA Annual Meeting,
New Orleans, June 2006

Online Audiovisual Catalogers/Cataloging Policy Committee Meeting
Friday, June 23, 2006, from 7:30-9:30 pm

Kelly McGrath will be the new CAPC chair.

John Attig gave a report on MARBI.

Of interest to OLAC, the discussion paper, 2006-DP06: Defining separate subfields for language codes of summaries/abstracts and subtitles/captions in field 041.
CAPC will put together a Best Practices Group to collect examples for the 041 field.
The CAPC members also discussed MARC proposal 2006-06: Definition of field 034 for geographic coordinates in the authorities format and discussion paper 2006-DP07: Recording set information for multipart cartographic materials.

Greta de Groat reported that the Joint Steering Committee would be discussing major issues using the “triage” system. The group would identify what is most urgent.

A group has proposed to make the 300 field for electronic resources mandatory.
The JSC will discuss issues about reproductions.
There is a concern that description and access is blurred in RDA.
Part I and II now Part A.
JSC will have hierarchical elements to help with absence of ISBD punctuation.
Wording around options in RDA will be clarified.
The notes fields will be additional information relating to other data elements.
Transcribe what you see.
There will be no separate constituency review of examples.
RDA Part 2 (now RDA Part A, chpt. 6-7) was released the week of June 19th.
Other issues on chapters 6 & 7, currently no rules on mixed responsibility.
JSC wants constituencies to look at “performance” as it relates to chapter 7.
RDA has changed the practice of principal performer, and CC:DA wants OLAC to look at this practice.
All JSC working documents will be posted on their web site
JSC want comments by Aug. 14. Greta will be out of town, and needs comments before July 24.

OLAC/CAPC Task Force on FAQ/Best Practices (L. Bodenheimer for C. Gerhart)
The task force hopes to have the FAQ proposal available at the OLAC conference in Phoenix, Oct. 2006.

NACO A/V Report (L. Bodenheimer for A. Caldwell)
The participants have been busy. The NACO A/V funnel has created 961 name authorities, 6 series authorities, and changed 349 name authorities. Chuck Herrold is now a member of the funnel. David Prochazka has set up a listserve for the NACO A/V participants. Ann Caldwell is looking for new methods of training new members.

Form/Genre Headings (L. Bodenheimer for D. Reser)
The CPSO has done some work with the cataloging staff in Motion Pictures and Broadcasting. It was hoped that a draft would be available, but they need more time. CPSO is working with OCLC and the Music Library Association on music form/genre headings.

AACR2 Examples Task Force (L. Bodenheimer)
The group did some work last fall, but they are currently waiting to see what will develop with RDA. The current examples group will work on the “former” part I, and a new group will be created to work on examples in “parts II & III.”

Of interest to the music community: Mark Scharff was re-elected to serve as member-at-large for uniform titles. There was a discussion of the Midwinter 2007 meeting, which will consist of a panel of outsourcing vendors. The panelists will respond to a set list of questions. There was a brief discussion of the Annual 2007 meeting.
