Subject Access Subcommittee

2002 Annual Report

Members: Mark McKnight (Chair), Drew Beisswenger, Ray Heigemeir, Mary Huismann, Renee McBride, Geraldine Ostrove (LC Representative), Wendy A. Sistrunk, Patricia Thomson

Michael Colby rotated off as Chair of the Subcommittee following the annual MLA meeting in Las Vegas and was succeeded by Mark McKnight. As MLA liaison, Colby attended the ALA/ALCTS Subject Access Committee (SAC) meetings at ALA Midwinter in New Orleans in January 2002 and McKnight attended the SAC meetings at the ALA annual conference in Atlanta in June 2002.

The following presentation was made at the open meeting of the Subcommittee, in conjunction with the Authorities Subcommittee, on February 20 at the MLA annual conference in Las Vegas: The American Folklife Center Ethnographic Thesaurus Project, by Suzanne Flandreau (Columbia College, Chicago). The Subcommittee in its business meeting continued to work on planning a preconference workshop on Library of Congress Subject Headings. This workshop would be part of the SACO workshops that LC has been presenting around the country, but it would also include music-specific sessions. Planning will be done in cooperation with the MLA Education Committee, MOUG, and the LC Cataloging Policy and Support Office. The workshop is targeted for the 2004 annual meeting. The Subcommittee also discussed other potential topics for consideration, including the following: libraries whose subject access differs from the standard use of LCSH; the history of music subject heading practice at LC; uses of controlled vocabulary for music outside of cataloging; international perspectives on music subject access; and the OCLC FAST project.
