BCC2002/Auth/5 2002 MRC, ALA Annual Report

BCC2002/Auth/5

Media Resources Committee of ALCTS
Report from the ALA Annual Meeting, Atlanta, GA, June 2002

Submitted by Terry Simpkins, Chair, Authorities Subcommittee

This year’s business meeting began with reports from various liaisons and subcommittees. Items of potential interest to MLA members include:

Next followed a discussion the proposed program for next year’s meeting, “Digital Audio/Digital Video: Is Your Library Digital Ready?” The proposed program would include an overview of how remote sound and visual files are acquired and marketed, how to deal with analog materials converted to digital, and legal/licensing issues. The program would be co-sponsored with the Networked Resources & Metadata Committee (NRMC).

Finally, the committee examined its relationship with other ALA committees and OLAC. How MRC might most effectively communicate with other ALA bodies, as well as external bodies, was one topic of discussion. Some members believed that, since MRC is primarily a cataloging-oriented committee, there might be other aspects of media librarianship that are not getting enough attention from the committee. There is also substantial overlap between MRC and OLAC (although OLAC is not an ALA body), and several people felt that the MRC charge is too broad and vague to be effective. A task force was established to review the MRC charge in light of the current charges of other media-oriented committees/subcommittees. There was also some discussion as to whether MRC should be oriented more towards policy-making or towards education.
