Report of the MRC 2002 Midwinter Meeting

ALCTS Media Resources Committee
Sunday, January 20, 2002
New Orleans, LA

Much of the 2002 ALA Midwinter business meeting of the ALCTS Media Resources Committee (MRC) focused on how MRC’s tactical plan fit in with the ALCTS Tactical Planning Document. The committee spent quite a bit of time articulating several possibilities for action:

It was determined that all of these areas could fit easily within the ALCTS Tactical Planning Document.

The remainder of the meeting was devoted to liaison reports, some of which might have interest to the music community. The OLAC liaison reported that a survey will be posted on their website regarding the future of the OLAC conference. The CC:DA liaison reported that the Characteristics of Electronic Resources Task Force is investigating whether or not Area 3 (i.e., 256 field) should be retained for electronic resources. Also, revised chapters 3 and 12 will appear in AACR2 Amendments 2002. The OCLC liaison reported:

The AMIA liaison reported that their new publication, AMIA Compendium of Moving Image Cataloging Practice, is now available from the Society of American Archivists (see http://www.amianet.org/05_Committees/5b2_CDSite/D2_Compendium/CompFrame.html for details and excerpts). Finally, the MARBI liaison reported on a proposal to establish three new subfields in MARC fields 508/511, $u, $3, $y. The $u would allow a Uniform Resource Identifier pointing to a cast list to be encoded; the $3 would be a coded way to point to the piece of the record to which the 508/511 field refers (e.g., for multiple works on one record), and $y would be a caption for $3.

Respectfully submitted,
Terry Simpkins
