BCC01/SAS/4
Subcommittee on Subject Access
2001 Annual Report
Members: Michael Colby (Chair), Drew Beisswenger, Ray Heigemeir,
Renee McBride, Mark McKnight, Wendy Sistrunk, Patricia Thomson, Geraldine Ostrove (LC Representative)
The following presentation was made at the open meeting of the
Subcommittee on February 24, 2001 at the annual meeting in New York: Music Cataloging and Form/Genre Implementation at
the Library of Congress (Geraldine Ostrove).
The Subcommittee met with Mari Itoh from the School of Information and
Library Science at Aichi Shukutoku University about her music searching users questionnaire; we look forward to the results
of her research. We continue to be concerned about the problems and inconsistencies in LCSH for folk songs. The
Subcommittee has learned that the American Folklife Center is looking into the possibility of creating an ethnographic
thesaurus; Drew Beisswenger volunteered to contact this project to monitor their progress and to see if there is some way
our Subcommittee can be of assistance. We continue to explore sponsorship of a SACO workshop tailored to music materials
to be held as a pre-conference to an upcoming annual meeting; Michael has been in touch with the Education Committee about
this. He has also contacted MOUG about coordinating with their meeting and/or co-sponsorship.
Subcommittee member Russell Hodges rotated off; Peggy Schein and
Jennifer Bollerman resigned. The significant contributions to the work of the Subcommittee by all were recognized.
As MLA liaison, Michael Colby attended the ALA/ALCTS Subject Analysis
Committee meetings in January and July of 2001.
