Charge

The Bibliographic Control Committee (BCC) maintains formal channels of communication among music catalogers, between music catalogers and the Library of Congress, and with other groups requiring carefully formulated positions on bibliographic control of music materials.  BCC is responsible for articulating and communicating official MLA proposals and responses in the area of bibliographic control.  It thus participates in maintaining and revising international codes for descriptive cataloging (including authority work), formats and standards for the electronic transmission of data, and subject and classification schemes for music materials.  Proposals, position papers, official responses/comments, or other formal documents prepared by BCC subcommittees, Task Forces or Working Groups are submitted to the BCC for approval before they are distributed.

The membership of the Bibliographic Control Committee consists of the following voting members:  Chair; Chair, Subcommittee on Descriptive Cataloging; Chair, Subcommittee on Subject Access; Chair, Subcommittee on MARC Formats; Chair, Authorities Subcommittee; and the editor of the Music Cataloging Bulletin.  Non-voting members include a representative from Library of Congress Special Materials Cataloging Division; representative(s) from the bibliographic utilities; and the Recording Secretary/Webmaster.

With the approval of the MLA President and Board of Directors, the Chair constitutes working groups related to the area of bibliographic control as necessary.  The Music Thesaurus Project Advisory Task Force Chair reports to the BCC but the Chair is not a member of BCC.  The BCC Chair serves as a member of the Organizational Liaison Committee.
